The Intramural Program (run by the Athletic Department) provides the opportunity for the University Community to participate in structured and competitive sports that are organized into leagues, tournaments, and one day events. Since the inception of the Gallagher Center –Intramurals at Philadelphia University has been able to reach new heights and expand in several areas. Participation numbers maintain a steady increase from year to year. In fact, almost 50% of the student body participated in some level of Intramural activity in 2010-2011. The value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education is emphasized in the notion that Intramural programming not only helps recruit students, but helps retain them as well.
In an effort to increase the student experience across the board, several elements highlight a comprehensive and diverse program. In addition to providing a multitude of sports ranging from outdoor soccer to wallyball, championship teams also earn the right to play other teams from local Universities. Most recently, our flag football champions played the champs from Drexel University on the turf at the Wachovia Center, following a Philadelphia Soul football game! Certified officials are also brought in for a number of sports to referee playoff competition, which only adds to a “big game” feel.
